As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:

Commentary
Tolkien quoted the opening verse of the Gloria Patri in Welsh in his lecture English and Welsh, republished as an essay in the collection The Monsters and the Critics. He gave the word gogoniant as a characteristic example of what he relished in the sound of Welsh.

The translation is from an English version used by Catholics, Orthodox and many Protestants. Note that "world without end" is more a paraphrase than a translation. A more literal rendering is found in another version used in Eastern Orthodox prayers: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

The text’s transcription emulates the Gothic minuscule, a common style of the Latin alphabet in the second half of the Middle Ages. We made use of Pia Frauss’ typeface _a e i o u.
