Commentary

The Litany of Loreto or Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a long series of invocations enumerating Mary’s names and qualities. It was approved by Pope Sixtus V in 1987.

We give the beginning of the text, that we supplemented with macrons to mark etymologically long vowels. It corresponds to the fragment that Tolkien translated into Quenya (also on this website), except the initial plea that Christ may hear, and the name “Mother of the Church”, that was not used yet since it has been only recently added by Pope John-Paul II.

Kyrie, eleison and Christe, eleison are of course not Latin, but the transcription of Greek Κύριε ἐλέησον and Χριστέ ἐλέησον.

The translation is the English text of the prayer.

The text’s transcription emulates the capitalis rustica, a style of the Latin alphabet that was in use in the imperial Rome and Late Antiquity for writing on papyrus or parchment with a reed pen. We made use of Hasan Guven’s typeface Vatican Rough Letters.
