Commentary
So did Glorfindel greet Aragorn in Tolkien The Lord of the Rings, book I, chapter 12. Tolkien provided a translation for the second part only, in a letter to Rhona Beare (n° 230 in Humphrey Carpenter’s edition). The first part is interpolated after the nearby following salutation to Frodo – translated, that is in Common Speech in the fictional frame of The Lord of the Rings – which seems to be of similar form.

The text is transcribed in tengwar or “letters of Fëanor” according to the general use of the Third Age created by Tolkien. An instance of its application to Sindarin is found in the third manuscript of the King’s Letter, published in Sauron Defeated p. 131.
