Page 92 of Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull’s book J. R. R. Tolkien – Artist and Illustrator is found a draft of Thrór’s map for The Hobbit with a Noldorin phrase, discussed in note p. 150. It is quite easy to understand, since the meaning of most words is known or easy to deduct; and then it clearly appears that it is a version of the sentence written in runes that gives the secret of the map. The translation found here is taken from the first chapter of The Hobbit, where Gandalf interprets the runic inscription.
